How to Increase Website Traffic

Five top tips

There are five main points you need to pay attention to when you are trying to increase the amount of traffic (Or when you are starting a website) to your site, they are as follows:

1. Topic

When starting a site, ick a topic you are interested in. This will make it easier to provide good content to people.

2. Structure

Think very carefully about the layout of your site. Its needs to be easy for your visitors to read and understand, and it also needs to be easy for the search engines to read and understand (These to goals should really go easily together). In my opinion the more simple layouts are better, have the bulk of your content in one place, dont show too much info on one page and make sure your site is well linked (So its easy to navigate around the site). Getting a good site structure to start with will it much easy as your site starts to grow.

3. Coding

Where possible always code your site correctly - a very good tool can be found here: http://validator.w3.org/ - you can point to a url or upload a html file here and it will be checked for coding standards, if there are errors it normally give you a good idea of what is wrong. As well as making your site search engine friendly, you will find that if you keep your coding correct, your site will work in the majority of web browsers (And actually there are ALOT of different browsers out there).

4. Content

The more original content you have on your site the better. When publishing content, think about your reader (What would they like to know?), Google will always love new and interesting content and the more pages you publish the more you will find them popping up in the popular search engines.

5. Time

Be patient. It does take time and alot of effort for a website to grow, I think Google gives you more credit as time goes on.

If you follow these five points you will have a successful website.

Common misconseptions regarding SEO and traffic building

Alot of people, when talking about SEO and traffic building, will mention back-links, pr (Google pagerank), linking building and other terms. I would like to clear up some misconceptions regarding traffic building and search engine optimisation:

1. Back Links

If you have friends in the website community, you can exchange links. If you find sites that are interesting you can link to them. If one day you find that someone has randomly linked to your site, that is a GREAT feeling! But aside from that, linking is not important - DS32.com does not have hardly any links coming in (I have not worked on link building what-so-ever) And it has had more initial success than any of my past sites had at the beginning - I have purposfully included only links that I really think are interesting sites and I have not worried about "link-building" at all.

Google and other search engines are becoming more intelligent as time goes by, and what they are looking for is good quality sites that are useful people searching for specific topics - therefore they will use all the technology in their power to find these sites, which is why the best way to get your site in the results really is to provide good, quality, original information!

b. Google PR

Its nice to check out your pagerank, but it is not as important as some people think. On Shareworld (another one of my sites), we decided about 6 months ago to remove all our link exchanges, about three months later we found our published PR had gone down to zero. However, we are now receiving more hits than ever before, and we also have more Google SERPS in top ten than we ever have before.
